On August 8, 2012, Squar Milner’s Stephen Landsman, CPA, was honored at the San Fernando Valley Business Journal’s Annual Trusted Advisor Awards.  This annual event “recognizes the important work of accountants, business bankers, wealth managers, attorneys and insurance professionals in the greater San Fernando Valley region.*”

More than 100 professionals were nominated for this prestigious award, and more than 400 of the Valley’s most influential professionals attended the event.  Stephen was one of only 20 honorees to receive the Trusted Advisor award, which “honor[s] individuals who are directly producing revenue and managing client accounts.”

Award winners are selected based on testimonials and interviews provided by clients of the nominees.  Reviews for Steve came from clients representing a variety of industries and accounting services.

BSI Energy Partners II, an investment firm specializing in Energy and Petroleum, described Steve as “…without question a great CPA.  His value as an advisor, however, goes well beyond his superb technical skills. Steve is extremely responsive; whenever my partners or I have a question he always has a thorough answer in a very short amount of time.  He is also very creative in finding solutions to complex unique problems; we can always count on Steve to think outside of the box, but always with a strong set of professional ethics and principle.  There are very few advisors that combine the same level of technical expertise, responsiveness, creativity, and ethics as Steven Landsman.”

Gourmet Foods International, a supplier of quality, handcrafted food products to the hospitality, airline, restaurant and institutional foodservice industries, had this to say of Steve:

…I have observed three qualities in Steve that have compelled me to rely on him.  He is expert in business and tax issues, he makes himself available whenever he is needed, and he goes out of his way to provide information on useful and interesting business developments to assist us.

When Gourmet Foods, Inc. had initially engaged Steve, we had some nagging tax and reporting challenges that Steve helped us easily resolve.  Recently our company was examined under a multiple year audit.  Steve’s handling of the interface with the auditor and his negotiation of the issues resulted in no change to our taxable income.

As I spent more time working with Steve, I recognized that he was a resource for a variety of issues that went well beyond the traditional role of the CPA.  Frequently I have sought his counsel on issues originally brought to us by our attorney, banker or insurance broker to obtain his position on the subject.

The best thing about working with Steve has been that he is well read, well informed and interested in a broad array of topics.  He is attuned to our business and has been a well-spring of ideas, connections, relevant information and interesting opportunities.  I can count on Steve sharing information on the latest opportunity or threat to my business as it materializes.

The President of New Way Landscape and Tree Services, a growing firm with 75 trucks and more than 200 employees providing landscape services in San Diego County, Riverside County, and Orange County, said of Steve: “Not only are his recommendations solid all of the time, but he has proven to be reliable and efficient time and time again – and in fact, is always actively seeking new ways to help save us money. Stephen comes up with more solutions than any previous accounting firm we have used. He is also of good moral character, and I value immensely the relationship we have grown to have over the years.  Stephen has been nothing short of phenomenal, and I am more than happy to have him be a part of this company and growing partnership.”

The President of the EngFlanders Group, experts in property management consulting, accounting, and training, said “Our business success is dependent on timely and accurate financial information.  Stephen has been there to support any number of questions that may come up with our client’s data.  Stephen’s knowledge, expertise and experience in Real Estate have been crucial in supporting us so that we can support our clients. It is a partnership that works for all of us.”

Stephen is a Tax Principal at Squar Milner with 20 years of experience that features client-oriented tax planning, preparation, and compliance services for real estate, manufacturing, wholesale, distribution, retail, professional, entertainment, and service industry clients.  Stephen’s tax planning and preparation expertise includes tax planning and financial reporting including the audit, review, and compilation of financial statements and governmental “yellow book” auditing, compliance testing, and reporting.  As a leader and active participant in engagements of due diligence, agreed upon procedures, and forensic investigations, Stephen prepares and provides custom reports, court declarations, and expert testimony.

Prior to joining Squar, Milner, Peterson, Miranda & Williamson LLP, Stephen was a Senior Manager in the Tax and Accounting Department of White, Zuckerman, Warsavsky, Luna, Wolf & Hunt, LLP.  There, he provided tax services, financial reporting and accounting, forensic services, expert reports, and testimony to business clients and high net worth individuals from diverse industries and professions.  Before that, Stephen was the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for a commercial and residential real estate company and a wholesale/distribution business.
